Launched in 2024 and based in the heart of San Francisco's tech scene, this project is all about creating the foundational software layer that could turn robots into collaborative powerhouses, much like how open-source ecosystems have revolutionized software development.

At its core, OpenMind aims to develop what many are calling the 'Android for robots.' By embracing open systems and decentralized teamwork, it's paving the way for robots to evolve from isolated performers to interconnected teams handling complex, real-world tasks on a massive scale.

The OM1 operating system stands out as a unified AI-powered core tailored for humanoid and quadruped robots. It seamlessly integrates multimodal large language models, dramatically simplifying the challenges of perception and decision-making in robotic applications.

The Team Behind It

OpenMind brings together a powerhouse of expertise from Stanford, McKinsey, and leading crypto firms, blending academic rigor with industry savvy.

Leading the charge is Jan Liphardt, the CEO and a Stanford associate professor with deep roots in decentralized systems. He's the visionary driving the project's strategy, drawing on years of experience in robotic software architecture.

On the tech side, CTO Boyuan Chen is a specialist in embodied AI, spearheading the integration of OM1 with popular robot hardware platforms to ensure smooth compatibility.

Handling growth and partnerships is Paige Xu, who brings her background from OKX Ventures and McKinsey. Her global network and fundraising prowess are key to expanding OpenMind's reach worldwide.

 

Funding and Growth

In August 2025, OpenMind secured a $20 million funding round, marking a pivotal moment as it accelerates toward broader adoption.

Pantera Capital took the lead, with notable participation from Coinbase Ventures, Sequoia China, Digital Currency Group (DCG), Ribbit Capital, and Amber Group—some of the most respected names in venture capital.

These funds will fuel the expansion of the engineering team, the development of standardized hardware integrations with major robot manufacturers, and the rapid rollout of FABRIC protocol nodes across the globe.
